Smith Carol Ann & Merz Eugene
Sr. Carol Ann Smith, SHCJ, is a member of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. She holds degrees from Rosemont College, Villanova University and Catholic University of America. Her ministry in the area of adult spirituality has included spiritual direction, directed and preached retreats and administration of a training program for spiritual directors in the Diocese of Toledo, Ohio. In addition, Sr. Carol Ann directed the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Marquette University for eleven years.
Fr. Eugene F. Merz, SJ, is a member of the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus. His ministry as a Jesuit has been primarily pastoral and focused on Ignatian Spirituality as Novice Director, spiritual director for Jesuits, Assistant Provincial for both Province Renewal and for Pastoral Ministries such as parishes, retreat houses, Native American ministries, hospital and prison chaplains. He has directed retreats and given Ignatian spirituality workshops around the world.
With a shared belief in the transforming power of The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, Sr. Carol Ann Smith, SHCJ and Fr. Eugene F. Merz, SJ have co-authored two books: Moment By Moment: A Retreat In Everyday Life, (2000) and Finding God In Each Moment: The Practice of Discernment in Everyday Life (2005). Their books are designed to be used in a variety of ways by individuals, married couples and communities as well as in settings such as educational institutions, parishes, retreat centers, CLC groups and by spiritual directors. They continue to facilitate groups of lay women and men who wish to grow in their use of Ignatian discernment in their lives and to offer workshops on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius.
